Updated |Editorial policy

A mangrove bay with a nature study centre and an aquarium on Chanthaburi's coast. What to see at Khung Kraben and how to get there.

Khung Kraben Bay is a sheltered bay on the coast of Chanthaburi province, in eastern Thailand. It is home to the Kung Krabaen Bay Royal Development Study Centre, set up under a royal initiative to study and demonstrate the sustainable use of coastal land and mangroves.

What to see

  • A mangrove boardwalk that loops through the forest, with signs explaining the ecosystem. It is a good place to see crabs, mudskippers and birds.
  • A public aquarium run by the fisheries authorities, with tanks showing local marine life.
  • Views across the bay, popular with cyclists and photographers at sunrise and sunset.

Visiting

Khung Kraben is about 30 km from Chanthaburi town and is best visited by car. The study centre is free to visit; check opening times before you go, as facilities may close on public holidays.

Where to stay

Nearby beaches such as Chao Lao and Laem Sadet have resorts and seafood restaurants. Chanthaburi town, with its old riverside quarter and gem market, is the other main base.
