Ko Lipe, Satun – island guide

Updated |Editorial policy

A small island at the far southern end of the Andaman Sea, near Malaysia. Beaches, getting there and when to go to Ko Lipe.

Ko Lipe (also written Ko Ri Pe) is a small island in Satun province, close to the Malaysian border. It sits on the edge of Tarutao National Park and is surrounded by clear water and coral, making it one of the most popular snorkelling destinations in southern Thailand.

The beaches

  • Pattaya Beach, on the south side, is the main arrival point in high season, with soft sand, resorts and restaurants.
  • Sunrise Beach, on the east coast, faces the islands of Ko Adang and Ko Rawi.
  • Sunset Beach, on the west, is smaller and quieter.
  • Walking Street, crossing the island between Pattaya and Sunrise beaches, is lined with cafés, dive shops and bars.

The island is home to a community of Urak Lawoi sea people, who have lived here for generations.

Getting there

In the high season, speedboats run from Pak Bara pier in Satun, and there are also boats from Langkawi in Malaysia and from Ko Lanta and other islands along the Andaman coast. The nearest airports are Trang and Hat Yai. Boats usually transfer passengers to long-tails or a floating pontoon before landing.

When to go

The season is roughly November to April. During the monsoon, boat services are greatly reduced, and many resorts close.
