Phraya Nakhon Cave, Sam Roi Yot – visitor guide
The cave with a royal pavilion lit by a shaft of sunlight. How to reach Phraya Nakhon Cave in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park.
Phraya Nakhon Cave is in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, about an hour south of Hua Hin. Inside a huge chamber whose roof has partly collapsed stands the Kuha Karuhas Pavilion, built for a visit by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1890. When the sun shines through the opening in the roof, the pavilion is lit by a dramatic shaft of light.
Getting there
- Drive to Bang Pu beach in the national park.
- From there, either take a short boat ride around the headland to Laem Sala beach, or walk over the headland on a steep trail of about 20–30 minutes.
- From Laem Sala, a steep, rocky path of about 430 metres climbs to the cave.
Tips
- The best light usually falls on the pavilion in the late morning, roughly between 10:00 and 11:00.
- Wear proper shoes; the path is steep and uneven.
- Bring water, especially in the hot season.
- A national park entrance fee is charged.
Where to stay
The national park has simple accommodation and campsites. Most visitors stay in Hua Hin or in the quieter resorts of Pranburi.
