Staying in Karon, Phuket

Updated |Editorial policy

One of Phuket's longest beaches, between Patong and Kata. What Karon is like, who it suits, and practical tips on getting around.

Karon is a long, wide beach on Phuket’s west coast, between Patong to the north and Kata to the south. It is quieter than Patong but has plenty of hotels, restaurants and shops, making it a popular all-round base.

What it is like

The beach stretches for several kilometres, with fine sand that squeaks underfoot. A road runs behind the beach, and most hotels are on the other side of it, so few properties are directly on the sand. The centre of Karon, around the roundabout and the temple, has markets and restaurants. Karon Noi (Relax Bay), at the northern end, is a small cove with a single large resort.

Who it suits

Karon suits families, couples and older travellers who want space on the beach and a good choice of places to eat, with the option of a short ride to Patong’s nightlife. It is not the place for secluded luxury or for an easy walk to the sea from every hotel.

Getting around

Karon is about an hour from the airport. Kata is within walking distance to the south, and Patong is about 15–20 minutes by road over the headland. The Phuket Smart Bus runs along the coast road through Karon.

Sea conditions

The beach shelves steeply in places, and strong rip currents are common during the May to October monsoon. Swim only between lifeguard flags. From November to April, the sea is usually calm.
