Staying in Khao Lak, Phang Nga
Long, quiet beaches north of Phuket and the gateway to the Similan Islands. Khao Lak's beaches compared, plus seasons and transfers.
Khao Lak is a stretch of coastline in Phang Nga province, about an hour or more north of Phuket International Airport. Its long, uncrowded beaches backed by forested hills make it a popular choice for families and couples, and it is the main base for diving trips to the Similan and Surin Islands.
The beaches
- Nang Thong is the most developed, with restaurants, shops and a small town centre.
- Bang Niang has a market, the Tsunami police boat memorial and a mix of hotels.
- Khuk Khak and Pakarang Cape further north are quieter, with larger resorts.
- Khao Lak beach itself, at the southern end near Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park, is small and secluded.
Who it suits
Khao Lak suits families, couples and divers who want space and calm. Nightlife is limited to a few bars. Most hotels are directly on the beach.
The Similan Islands
The Similan Islands National Park, about 60–70 km offshore, is reached by speedboat from Thap Lamu pier. It is open only from about mid-October to mid-May each year, with a daily cap on visitors. Overnight liveaboard diving trips also depart from Thap Lamu.
When to go
The best months are November to April. During the monsoon, from May to October, the sea is rough, swimming can be dangerous and some resorts close.
