Staying on Ko Samet, Rayong

Updated |Editorial policy

A small national-park island three hours from Bangkok. Ko Samet's bays compared, how to get there and when to avoid the crowds.

Ko Samet is a small, dry island off the coast of Rayong, part of Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park. Its fine white sand and clear water, combined with its closeness to Bangkok, make it one of Thailand’s most popular weekend island escapes.

The bays

  • Sai Kaew is the longest and busiest beach, near the main pier, with resorts, restaurants and evening fire shows.
  • Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai are lively, with bars and mid-range bungalows.
  • Ao Tub Tim (Pudsa) and Ao Nuan are small and relaxed.
  • Ao Wong Duean is a horseshoe bay with restaurants and its own ferry service.
  • Ao Thian (Candlelight Beach) and the southern bays are quiet and rustic.
  • Ao Prao, on the west coast, is the only bay facing the sunset, with a few upscale resorts.

Getting there

Buses and minivans run from Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport to Ban Phe pier in about three to four hours. Ferries and speedboats leave throughout the day for Na Dan pier and some of the bays. A national park entrance fee is collected on arrival.

When to go

The best months are November to April. Ko Samet tends to get less rain than many islands during the wet season, but seas can be choppy. Visit midweek if you can: weekends and Thai holidays are crowded and more expensive.
