Staying in Nimman, Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai's modern district of cafés, malls and serviced apartments. Who Nimmanhaemin suits and how it compares with the Old City.
Nimmanhaemin Road, usually shortened to Nimman, lies west of the Old City, near Chiang Mai University and the foot of Doi Suthep. Over the past two decades it has become the city’s trendiest district, known for cafés, restaurants, galleries and co-working spaces.
What it is like
The main road is lined with numbered side streets (sois) full of independent cafés, bars and boutique hotels. At the northern end, the Maya shopping centre and One Nimman complex add bigger shops and a food court. The neighbourhood is busy in the evenings, especially at weekends.
Who it suits
Nimman suits digital nomads, young travellers and long-stay visitors, and anyone who prefers modern comforts to historic atmosphere. It is also a convenient base for trips up Doi Suthep. Travellers focused on temples may prefer the Old City.
Getting around
The Old City is about 10 minutes by car, and the airport about 15 minutes. Red songthaews and ride-hailing apps are easy to find. Doi Suthep temple is about 30 minutes up the mountain road.
When to go
November to February has the best weather. Air quality is often poor from about February to April.
