Staying on Sukhumvit, Bangkok – Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong and Thong Lo
What Sukhumvit Road is like section by section, who it suits, how to get around on the BTS and MRT, and what to expect from hotels there.
Sukhumvit Road runs east from central Bangkok for many kilometres, and the BTS Skytrain follows it overhead. When people say they are “staying on Sukhumvit”, they usually mean the stretch between Nana and Ekkamai, which has one of the city’s largest concentrations of hotels, restaurants and serviced apartments.
Sukhumvit section by section
- Nana (Soi 3–11) is the most hectic part, with nightlife, street stalls and many mid-range hotels. Convenient, but noisy at night.
- Asok (Soi 15–21) is the transport heart of Sukhumvit, where the BTS meets the MRT at Sukhumvit station. Terminal 21 shopping centre and the Benchakitti Park lake are nearby.
- Phrom Phong (Soi 24–39) is calmer and upmarket, with the EmQuartier and Emporium malls, Benjasiri Park and many Japanese restaurants.
- Thong Lo and Ekkamai (Soi 55–63) are residential and fashionable, known for bars, cafés and restaurants. Hotels here are often smaller and more stylish.
- Further east (On Nut and beyond) is cheaper and more local, a good option for longer stays on the BTS line.
Who it suits
Sukhumvit is a good choice if you want easy transport, lots of places to eat and a big choice of hotels. It is less convenient for the Grand Palace and old-town temples, which are about 30–45 minutes away by MRT or taxi, or you can take the MRT to Sanam Chai.
Getting around
The BTS Sukhumvit line connects the area with Siam in a few minutes, and with the Chatuchak weekend market to the north. The MRT Blue Line crosses Sukhumvit at Asok and continues to Silom, Chinatown and the old town. Traffic on Sukhumvit Road is heavy at rush hour, so the train is usually faster than a taxi.
Tips for choosing a hotel
- Check the walking distance to the nearest BTS station; some sois are long, and a “Sukhumvit” address can be a 15-minute walk from the main road.
- Rooms facing the main road can be noisy. Ask for a high floor or a room at the back.
- Odd-numbered sois are on the north side of the road and even-numbered on the south side, which helps when giving directions to taxis.
