Where to stay in Ayutthaya – old city or riverside

Updated |Editorial policy

Should you stay overnight in Ayutthaya? The island old city, the riverside and Bang Pa-In compared, plus when to visit the temples.

Ayutthaya was the capital of the Siamese kingdom for about four centuries until it was sacked in 1767. Its ruined temples and palaces form the Historic City of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The old city stands on an island where three rivers meet, about 80 km north of Bangkok.

Day trip or overnight?

Most visitors come on a day trip from Bangkok, which is easy by train, minivan or river cruise. Staying a night is worth it if you want to see the temples in the soft early-morning light, avoid the midday heat, and enjoy the night market and illuminated ruins in the evening.

Choosing an area

  • The island (old city) puts you within cycling distance of Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Ratchaburana. Many small guesthouses and boutique hotels are near the night market and Naresuan Road.
  • The riverside, especially across from the island, has hotels with views of the river and of Wat Chaiwatthanaram at sunset.
  • Bang Pa-In, about 20 km south, is the site of the royal summer palace and a few quieter hotels.

When to go

The cool season from November to February is the best time for exploring on foot or by bicycle. March to May is extremely hot; start early and rest at midday. In the rainy season, the rivers sometimes flood low-lying areas, particularly in September and October.

Getting there and around

Trains run frequently from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and from Hua Lamphong, taking about 1.5–2 hours. Minivans also run from Bangkok. Ayutthaya’s sights are spread out, so rent a bicycle, hire a tuk-tuk for a few hours or join a guided tour.
