A small Isan province known for the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival and its triangular cushions. Where to stay and when to visit.

Yasothon is a small, rural province in Isan, between Ubon Ratchathani and Roi Et. It is best known as the home of Thailand’s most famous Bun Bang Fai (rocket festival), held every May, and for its triangular “mon khit” cushions, made in the village of Ban Si Than.

Where to stay

Yasothon town has a limited number of simple hotels and guesthouses. During the rocket festival, many visitors stay in Ubon Ratchathani or Roi Et, about an hour or so away by road, which have more choice.

Things to see

  • Phaya Khan Khak Museum, built in the shape of a giant toad, tells the legend behind the rocket festival.
  • Ban Si Than is known for its handmade triangular cushions.
  • Phra That Phra Anon in the town is an important local stupa.

When to go

The rocket festival is usually held in May. The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable time for general travel.

Getting there

The nearest airports with flights from Bangkok are Ubon Ratchathani and Roi Et. Buses connect Yasothon with Bangkok and other Isan cities.
