The Big Buddha, Phuket – visitor guide

Updated |Editorial policy

A 45-metre white marble Buddha on the Nakkerd Hills with views over Chalong Bay. How to visit Phuket's Big Buddha and what to wear.

The Big Buddha (Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Eknakiri) sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills, between Chalong and Kata, in the south of Phuket. The seated image is about 45 metres tall and faced with white Burmese jade marble. It is visible from much of the south of the island.

What to see

  • The statue and its platform, with views over Chalong Bay, Kata and Karon.
  • A smaller brass Buddha next to the main statue.
  • Exhibits on the construction, funded largely by donations, which you can contribute to by buying a marble tile and writing a message on it.

Tips

  • This is a religious site: cover shoulders and knees. Sarongs are available at the entrance.
  • Entry is free; donations are welcome.
  • The road up is steep and winding; take care if riding a scooter.
  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for cooler weather and softer light.

Combine with

Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most important temple, is about 15 minutes away by road. Promthep Cape, in the far south, is a popular sunset viewpoint.
