Staying in Ao Nang, Krabi

Updated |Editorial policy

Krabi's main beach town and boat hub. What Ao Nang is like, how it compares with Railay and Klong Muang, and island-hopping tips.

Ao Nang is the main tourist town in Krabi province, set on a bay framed by limestone cliffs. It is the most practical base in the area, with the widest choice of hotels and restaurants and frequent boats to Railay and the surrounding islands.

What it is like

The town stretches along a beachfront road lined with restaurants, shops and travel agents. The beach itself is pleasant but not the most beautiful in Krabi; its strength is as a launch point for day trips. Noppharat Thara Beach, to the north-west, is a long, quieter beach in a national park, with casuarina trees and views of the islands.

Who it suits

Ao Nang suits families, couples and first-time visitors to Krabi who want convenience and plenty of choice. If you want spectacular scenery from your room, consider Railay; for a quieter resort stay, look at Klong Muang or Tubkaek.

Island-hopping

Long-tail boats leave from the beach for Railay, about 15 minutes away. Day trips go to the Four Islands (Ko Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Phra Nang Cave Beach), the Hong Islands and, by speedboat, to Ko Phi Phi. Most islands are within national parks that charge an entrance fee.

Getting there

Krabi International Airport is about 30–40 minutes by road. Shared minivans, taxis and songthaews run between the airport, Krabi Town and Ao Nang.

When to go

The best months are November to April, when seas are calm. From May to October, the monsoon brings rain and rougher water, and some boat trips are cancelled at short notice.
