Staying on Ko Lanta, Krabi

Updated |Editorial policy

A long, laid-back island with west-coast beaches, an old town and a national park. Which part of Ko Lanta to choose and how to get there.

Ko Lanta is a long, narrow island in southern Krabi province, popular with families, couples and long-stay visitors who want a slower pace than Phuket or Phi Phi. The main island is Ko Lanta Yai, connected to the mainland by road through Ko Lanta Noi.

Choosing a beach

The west coast has a string of beaches, each quieter than the last as you head south:

  • Klong Dao, in the north, is long and shallow, good for families.
  • Long Beach (Phra Ae) has the most restaurants and some nightlife.
  • Klong Khong and Klong Nin are relaxed, with rocky stretches and good sunsets.
  • Kantiang Bay and Ba Kan Tiang in the south are small, beautiful bays with upscale resorts.
  • Mu Ko Lanta National Park, at the southern tip, has a lighthouse and walking trail.

On the east coast, Lanta Old Town has wooden stilt houses, seafood restaurants and a mixed Thai, Chinese, Muslim and Chao Leh (sea gypsy) heritage.

Getting there

From Krabi airport or Krabi Town, minivans and taxis take about two to three hours, crossing two short car ferries. In high season, boats also run from Ao Nang, Phi Phi and Phuket.

When to go

The best months are November to April. In the monsoon season (May to October), many resorts close or reduce services, and some boat routes stop running, but the island is very quiet and green.
