Staying in Pattaya – areas compared

Updated |Editorial policy

Central Pattaya, Naklua, Wong Amat and Pratumnak compared. Who Pattaya suits, family-friendly areas and getting around.

Pattaya grew from a fishing village into one of Thailand’s largest resort cities. It is known for its nightlife, but it also has family attractions, big shopping centres, golf courses and a wide choice of hotels, all within about two hours of Bangkok.

Choosing an area

  • Central Pattaya (Beach Road and Second Road) is the busiest part, with the beach promenade, Central Festival mall and nightlife. Walking Street, at the southern end, is the main nightlife district.
  • Naklua and Wong Amat, to the north, are quieter and more upmarket, with family resorts and the Sanctuary of Truth.
  • Pratumnak Hill, between Pattaya and Jomtien, is residential and calm, with small beaches and viewpoints.
  • East Pattaya, inland across Sukhumvit Road, has golf courses, villas and attractions such as theme parks.

Who it suits

Central Pattaya suits nightlife-focused travellers. Families and couples are usually happier in Naklua, Wong Amat, Pratumnak or Jomtien, using the city’s attractions on day trips.

Getting around

Baht buses (songthaews) run fixed loops along Beach Road and Second Road for a small fare. Ride-hailing apps, taxis and motorbike taxis are widely available.

When to go

The most comfortable months are November to March. Pattaya is visited all year, and weekends and holidays are busy with visitors from Bangkok.
