Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok – hotel profile
Bangkok's historic riverside hotel, first opened as The Oriental in the 1870s. Location, history and what is nearby.
The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok stands on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bang Rak, the old trading district of Charoen Krung. It opened as The Oriental in the 1870s, making it one of the oldest hotels in Asia, and it remains one of Bangkok’s best-known addresses.
History
The hotel grew up when Bangkok’s river was its main street and foreign trading houses lined the banks. Its original colonial-style building, now known as the Authors’ Wing, has hosted writers including Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham and Noël Coward, whose names are given to its suites. The modern towers were added in the second half of the 20th century.
