Staying in Chaweng, Ko Samui

Updated |Editorial policy

Ko Samui's busiest beach. What Chaweng and Chaweng Noi are like, who they suit, and how they compare with Lamai and Bophut.

Chaweng is the longest and most developed beach on Ko Samui, on the island’s east coast. It has white sand, turquoise water and the island’s greatest concentration of hotels, restaurants, shops and nightlife.

What it is like

  • North Chaweng is calmer, with resorts on the beach and shallow water, good for families.
  • Central Chaweng is the busiest part, with the main beach road, Central Samui shopping centre, bars and clubs.
  • Chaweng Noi, a separate cove to the south, is quieter and dominated by larger resorts.
  • Chaweng Lake, behind the beach, has local restaurants and a jogging path.

Who it suits

Chaweng suits first-time visitors, groups and anyone who wants nightlife and convenience. Families and couples looking for peace may prefer the northern end, Chaweng Noi, or other beaches such as Bophut, Choeng Mon or Maenam.

Getting around

Samui Airport is about 10–15 minutes away by road, very convenient for arrivals. Songthaews run around the island’s ring road, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are available, though prices are higher than on the mainland.

When to go

The best weather is usually from January to August. The wettest months are October to December, when rain and wind can be heavy.
