Staying in Lamai, Ko Samui
Samui's second-largest beach, more relaxed than Chaweng. What Lamai is like, who it suits and what to see nearby.
Lamai is Ko Samui’s second-largest beach, south of Chaweng on the east coast. It has a similar mix of hotels, restaurants and bars, but on a smaller scale and with a more relaxed atmosphere.
What it is like
The beach is long and sandy, with clear water. Its southern end is famous for Hin Ta and Hin Yai, two rock formations popular with sightseers. The village behind the beach has a market, restaurants and a Sunday night walking street. There are good viewpoints on the road over the headland towards Chaweng.
Who it suits
Lamai suits couples, families and long-stay visitors who want a beach town with services but less noise than Chaweng. It offers good value compared with the more upscale north and west coasts.
Getting around
Samui Airport is about 25–30 minutes by road. Songthaews run along the ring road to Chaweng and beyond. Na Muang waterfalls and the island’s interior are a short drive away.
Sea conditions
Swimming is good for much of the year. During the northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, waves can be strong and the water less clear.
