Staying on Ko Pha Ngan

Updated |Editorial policy

More than the Full Moon Party. Where to stay on Ko Pha Ngan, from Haad Rin to Thong Nai Pan and Srithanu, and how to get there.

Ko Pha Ngan lies between Ko Samui and Ko Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. It is world-famous for the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin beach, but most of the island is green, hilly and relaxed, with yoga and wellness retreats, jungle waterfalls and quiet bays.

Choosing an area

  • Haad Rin, on the southern peninsula, is the party hub. It is crowded and noisy around the full moon, and much calmer the rest of the month.
  • Thong Sala, on the west coast, is the main town and ferry pier, with markets and services.
  • Srithanu and Haad Yao on the west coast are known for yoga centres, healthy cafés and sunsets.
  • Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai in the north-east are beautiful, sheltered bays with resorts ranging from simple to luxurious.
  • Haad Salad and Chaloklum in the north-west have calm water and snorkelling.

Who it suits

Ko Pha Ngan suits backpackers and partygoers at Haad Rin, and couples, families and wellness travellers elsewhere. The hilly roads can be steep, so be careful if renting a scooter.

Getting there

There is no airport. Ferries and speedboats run from Ko Samui (about 30 minutes) and from Surat Thani’s Don Sak pier, and continue to Ko Tao. Book accommodation well ahead for the dates around the full moon.

When to go

The best months are generally January to August. October to December is wettest, with occasional ferry cancellations.
