How to choose a hotel in Thailand – practical tips
Location first, then everything else. A practical checklist for choosing hotels in Thailand, from beach access and noise to deposits and check-in rules.
Thailand has an enormous range of places to stay, from family-run guesthouses to some of the world’s most famous resorts. Price and photos only tell part of the story. These are the questions that matter most once you are on the ground.
1. Location before luxury
- In cities, check the walking distance to the nearest BTS, MRT or river pier in Bangkok. A great hotel 20 minutes from public transport can cost you hours in traffic.
- At the beach, check whether the hotel is actually on the beach, across a road from it, or on a hillside. “Sea view” does not always mean “beachfront”.
- On islands, check how far the hotel is from the pier or airport and whether transfers are included.
2. Noise
Nightlife areas such as Bangla Road in Patong, Khao San Road in Bangkok and Haad Rin on Ko Pha Ngan can be loud until the early hours. Look at the map, and ask for a room away from the street or on a high floor.
3. The season
In the rainy season, some small island resorts close or reduce services, and boat transfers may be cancelled. On the Andaman coast from May to October, check whether the beach in front of your hotel is safe for swimming.
4. Deposits, taxes and fees
- Many hotels ask for a security deposit at check-in, by credit card or cash, which is refunded at check-out.
- Prices may be shown with or without service charge and VAT. Check the final amount.
- Some national park islands, such as Ko Samet, charge a park entrance fee on arrival that is separate from the hotel bill.
5. Registration and passports
By law, hotels must register foreign guests with the immigration authorities, so you will be asked for your passport at check-in. This is normal.
6. Licensed accommodation
Licensed hotels are registered with the authorities. Look for an established business with a clear address, a working phone number and recent guest reviews on independent platforms.
7. Booking directly or through a site
Booking sites make it easy to compare prices and read reviews. Booking directly with the hotel sometimes gets you a better rate, a free upgrade or more flexible cancellation, especially for smaller properties. Compare both before you book.
