Thailand with kids – the best family bases
Family-friendly places to stay in Thailand, from calm beaches to Bangkok neighbourhoods, plus practical tips on heat, food and getting around.
Thailand is one of Asia’s easiest countries to travel with children. Thai culture is very welcoming to families, hotels are used to young guests, and distances between bases can be kept short.
Family-friendly beach bases
- Kata and Karon, Phuket: good beaches, plenty of restaurants and calm seas in the dry season.
- Bang Tao and Laguna, Phuket: large resorts with pools and kids’ clubs, close to the airport.
- Khao Lak, Phang Nga: long, quiet beaches with resorts right on the sand.
- Ao Nang and Klong Muang, Krabi: easy boat trips to islands and calm water in season.
- Bophut and Maenam, Ko Samui: calm north-coast water, good in the middle of the year.
- Hua Hin: easy to reach from Bangkok, with family resorts and water parks nearby.
In the city
In Bangkok, hotels near Siam or on the riverside put you close to family attractions such as the aquarium at Siam Paragon, Lumphini Park and the river boats. Hotels with pools are a big advantage in the heat.
Nature and wildlife
Khao Yai offers wildlife spotting, waterfalls and farm attractions within three hours of Bangkok. In Chiang Mai, choose an elephant sanctuary that does not offer riding or performances.
Practical tips
- Heat: plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon, and use high-SPF sunscreen.
- Sea safety: respect red flags; rip currents are common on west-facing beaches from May to October.
- Food: mild dishes such as fried rice, grilled chicken and noodle soup are everywhere; ask for “mai phet” (not spicy).
- Transport: car seats are rarely provided in taxis; book a private transfer with child seats in advance if you need them.
- Fewer moves: choose two or three bases for a two-week trip rather than changing hotels every two nights.
